To help hoteliers navigate the complex challenges brought by artificial intelligence, hotel technology expert, author, and educator Ira Vouk founded the AI Hospitality Alliance (AIHA). This is an independent global platform designed to enable all parties in the hospitality industry to collaboratively advance AI-related work and encourage responsible AI applications.

According to an April announcement, the initiative aims to bring "structure, collaboration, and direction" to how the hospitality industry approaches AI through education, events, and research. AIHA plans to offer online courses, a weekly newsletter, host industry events, and publish industry insights and thought leadership content on its website. Additionally, this new organization targets stakeholder groups that have "traditionally operated in silos," including hoteliers, technology partners, researchers, and investors.

AIHA's launch comes as several major hotel companies have announced AI initiatives in recent months, including Wyndham Hotels & Resorts and Choice Hotels International rolling out AI-driven tools to improve guest booking experiences and enhance owner operational efficiency.

To gain deeper insight into the AI Hospitality Alliance and its mission, Vouk spoke with Hotel Dive about why she founded the organization, her views on the future of AI, and how technology can help address fragmentation.

This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.

HOTEL DIVE: What prompted you to launch this alliance?

IRA VOUK:I founded this organization because the hospitality and tourism industry as a whole lacks a body or platform that can unify AI efforts across all parties. The primary goal is to help the industry make tangible progress in AI adoption—not just discuss it, but truly shape the direction of AI.

The idea had been brewing for about a year, but the final trigger was my frustration with the lack of action or coordination within the industry. Of course, the idea had been developing for some time, and I have been actively involved in AI-related matters. I was trying to lead discussions within the industry, but I wanted to turn those discussions into action, which the industry had not achieved on a large scale before, and there was a lack of coordination among different efforts. Although each effort has value and contributes to the industry, we lacked a unified platform to gather, discuss, and drive things forward—and AIHA is exactly that platform.

What are the main goals of AIHA?

The alliance's primary goal is to unify the industry's AI efforts—not only to discuss and stay informed (which is equally important), but also to drive tangible progress that influences the direction of AI.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime reset opportunity for our industry, where we can truly influence how AI evolves.

—Ira Vouk, Founder of the AI Hospitality Alliance

But if we miss the opportunity again like we did in the early days of the internet 30 years ago, things will only get worse. We have the chance to take action and help hotel companies and other stakeholders find better ways to adapt to the new reality being reshaped before us. We can either stand by and watch, or we can actively drive change and shape the future. AIHA was founded to help shape this process by strengthening and fostering collaboration among various stakeholders across different forums.

What do you see as the biggest opportunity for the hospitality industry in AI?

The fragmentation issue. Many integration problems stem from fragmentation. In my view, AI has the potential to help us solve this. Once solved, the pace of innovation in the industry will accelerate dramatically.

What is the future of hospitality and AI?

In the future, if AI becomes part of the ecosystem, the potential will be even brighter. I hope that in the future, hoteliers will have more control, integration issues will be resolved, and the pace of innovation will accelerate. I sincerely hope that different stakeholders can collaborate, communicate, and work together to fully leverage AI's potential. We must move away from the mindset of "we are the most conservative industry" and instead stand at the forefront of digital innovation.

Why do you think the hospitality industry often lags behind?

Part of the reason is a lack of coordination—it's a fragmented industry. There are significant players, but they don't work collaboratively. Previously, no entity could bring all parties together. We are a conservative industry, but it's changing. This will make us more innovative and open to embracing new and exciting things.

Is there anything else you'd like to add about AIHA and your own mission?

I'm a "madman" passionate about helping the industry innovate—that's my primary goal. As an independent consultant, I've been doing this for years. AIHA allows me to achieve this on a larger scale. Helping the industry grow is my greatest passion, and I will dedicate my life to it. I'm delighted to see the industry's support and embrace of this initiative, which tells me that AIHA is filling a significant gap.
